New Delhi, June 6 : Amid the clamour for an in-depth investigation into the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic, Indian scientists from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi were reportedly the first to have flagged the lab-leak theory.
A team of biologists at the Kusuma School of Biological Sciences in IIT Delhi wrote a 22-page research paper that was released as a pre-print on bioRxiv on January 31, last year.
However, in response to a deluge of criticism, the research paper on COVID origin was withdrawn soon after it was posted. It was the first scientific study signalling the possibility of the virus being engineered.
IIT Delhi team claimed SARS-CoV-2 had 4 'inserts' in spike protein that are similar to those in HIV, a highly unlikely occurrence in nature. Scientific community refutes these conclusions.
