× In the local body polls in Gujarat, the ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) retained its dominant position with a thumping majority, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made inroads into the BJP’s heartland by winning 42 seats across panchayats and municipalities.
The State Election Commission data up to 7 pm on Tuesday showed BJP winning 3,322 seats in Taluka Panchayats, 785 seats in district panchayats and 2,063 seats in municipalities. Independent candidates won 115, 3 and 172 seats respectively for the three civic bodies.
After its successful debut in Municipal Corporation elections in Surat, Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP surprised the political opponents by making further inroads into Gujarat villages.

Gandhinagar, Feb 8 : Congress MLA Imran Khedawala said on Monday that he had submitted his resignation as legislator to Gujarat Congress chief Amit Chavda to protest over the ticket distribution for the local body elections in Behrampura area of Ahmedabad. I tendered my resignation to the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee chief on Monday. My constituency Jamalpur Khadia consists of Jamalpur, Khadia and Behrampura wards of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. After the high command selected four nominees for Behrampura, I conveyed it to them. After these four filed their nominations, I came to know that two other candidates had also filed papers on Congress tickets, Khedawala alleged.

Trouble has started brewing in Congress quarters in Gujarat. As the date for Ahmedabad civic polls draws closer, an MLA has threatened to resign over a candidate dispute.
All 10 wards of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation are set to go to the polls on February 21. The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee had on Tuesday declared a list of 40 candidates four each for 10 wards.
