Questions and Answers on Zero Pollution Action Plan

Met dank overgenomen van Europese Commissie (EC), gepubliceerd op woensdag 12 mei 2021. Why do we need to act more on pollution? Despite significant progress in the EU over the last decades, pollution still heavily impacts our health and the environment. In the EU, one in eight deaths is linked to environmental pollution, with 90% of these deaths due to chronic diseases, out of which cancers score as the most frequent ones. It is estimated that air pollution alone causes up to 400.000 premature deaths each year. Pollution s most harmful impacts on human health are typically borne by the most vulnerable groups, notably children, people with medical conditions, older persons, persons with disabilities and those living in poorer socio-economic conditions, creating thus further inequalities.

How can we influence European policies as citizens?

European Commission open to consider cage rearing ban initiative

Three members of the European Commission have reacted positively to a public petition requesting the phase-out of cage rearing in the EU, expressing support to the initiative. On Thursday (15 April), promoters of the European Citizens Initiative (ECI) “End of cage age” presented the campaign before European lawmakers at a joint public hearing of the European Parliament’s petition (PETI) and agriculture (AGRI) committees. Citizen initiatives allow petitions that reach the one million signatures threshold to be discussed by the European Commission, which can decide to put forward a legislative proposal on the matter. With 1.4 million signatures from more than 18 member states, campaigners for the “End of cage age” met the requirements  and are now waiting for the Commission’s response.

Expert: Portugal s new anti-Legionella regime fits with EU tap water rules

The new Portuguese framework for the prevention and control of Legionnaires’ diseases is compatible with the flexibility allowed under the European Union’s overhauled tap water rules, a Portuguese health expert has told EURACTIV.com. Ricardo Santos, head of the water microbiology laboratory at Lisbon University’s Instituto Superior Técnico praised the EU’s revision of the Drinking Water Directive (DWD) that updates parameters of water quality set more than 20 years ago. “It is important that the new directive starts to take into account other pathogenic organisms as, up to now, the only microbial indicator in tap water is for E. coli,” he said.
