Picture: SUPPLIED Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel have been working closely with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) in building a temporary structure for students of Galoa Island Primary School in Vanua Levu. Galoa Island Primary School suffered extensive damage from the Tropical Cyclone Yasa last year. With the classes to begin in the next two weeks, the joint operation was in a race against time to provide a suitable structure for students to study in when classes begin on January 19, 2021.

  Jan 06, 2021 10:20:27 AM A temporary water distribution point is now open at Bakana Jetty in Vanua Levu through the combined efforts of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) and Australian Defense Force (ADF). The water purification desalination system was set up by the Australian Army in line with strict covid-safe protocols and in conjunction with the Water Authority of Fiji (WAF). The system is now generating safe, potable water to Tropical Cyclone Yasa impacted communities on the island. Over 13,000 liters of clean water has already been distributed by the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). Australia’s High commissioner to Fiji John Feakes in a tweet acknowledged the RFMF and ADF for the installation of the temporary water purification system which will generate safe portable water for the TC Yasa impacted communities in Vanua Levu.

Photo: Fiji government All the schools that were used as evacuation centres in Fiji s Northern Division because of Tropical Cyclone Yasa have closed. The category 5 storm, with winds gusting as high as 300km/h, caused huge damage, in particular in Vanua Levu, where villages and livelihoods were destroyed. These schools will now be fumigated by the Ministry of Health officials on the ground in anticipation of the start of the new school year on January 18 according to officials. Thirty-six community evacuation centres remain active with 928 evacuees from 129 households in the Northern Division, while other centres in the Central, Western and Eastern Divisions have been closed.
