Here I am in Atlanta, still smarting from a disconcerting national media glare since the recent kerfuffle about a new voting law passed by the Republican-controlled Georgia legislature. The force of the backlash and the counter-backlash is enough to give you vertigo.
It wasn t that long ago when Georgia was considered a dependably Republican sleepy Southern backwater. US President Joe Biden s victory in Georgia in the presidential elections last year and a shocking Democratic sweep of run-off elections this January have made Republicans sit up and take notice.
Biden was the first Democrat to win Georgia in 28 years, and Sen. Jon Ossoff and Sen. Raphael Warnock s victories in January were a stunning reversal for Republicans, who had expressly designed the run-off system to ensure a lopsided partisan advantage.

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms is pushing back against new voting restrictions approved by the Republican-controlled Georgia state legislature and signed into law by Gov. Brian Kemp in March. Lance Bottoms signed an administrative order of her own Tuesday directing city officials to create a plan to “mitigate the impact” of the new rules.
The new rules impose onerous requirements on voting by mail, limit the number of drop-boxes ballots where can be deposited and the hours they will be available to voters, and reduces the number polling places in cities like Atlanta (while expanding the number in more rural areas), and make it easier for state officials to depose local election officials. After losing the presidential contest and two Senate races in quick succession, the Republican-controlled Georgia legislature passed a comprehensive bill to suppress the very voters
Black voters who defeated them.
In CNN’s summary: “The new law imposes new voter identification requirements for absentee ballots, empowers state officials to take over local elections boards, limits the use of ballot drop boxes and makes it a crime to approach voters in line to give them food and water.”
