Des Moines Register Lawmakers in the Iowa House and Senate have passed legislation to shorten Iowa s early voting period, close polls earlier on Election Day and create new criminal charges for county auditors who disobey state laws. The measure passed the Iowa Senate Tuesday evening on a party-line vote of 30-18, with every Republican in support and every Democrat opposed. It passed the Republican-controlled House on Wednesday on a vote of 57-37, also on a party-line vote. The bill, Senate File 413, now goes to Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds desk. She has indicated she is likely to sign it. If the legislation is signed into law, Iowans would have 20 days of early voting, down from 29 under current law. Polls would close at 8 p.m. for all elections, instead of the current 9 p.m. cutoff for primary and general elections.
