Harrop: It is in companies interest to preserve democratic government

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had a warning for American business: “Our private sector must stop taking cues from the Outrage-Industrial Complex.” The sector’s complaints centered around Republicans’ going state to state to undermine free and fair elections. And so, are companies outraged? Damn straight they are. They have good reason, and it’s not because their chief executives are “woke” or the left pressured them. It’s because a healthy democracy is in their corporate interests. The Trump-led push to overturn the 2020 election results, Rebecca Henderson writes in Harvard Business Review, “is a threat not only to democracy, but to the long-term health of the economy and to the strength of American business.” Similar attacks wrecked democracies in Europe in the 1930s, and South America in the 1960s and ‘70s, with dire economic repercussions.

Oklahoma advances trans sports ban despite pleas from Democrats

Mauree Turner, a Black queer Muslim state House candidate in Oklahoma. (MaureeTurnerOK/ Twitter) Oklahoma has become the latest state to advance legislation that would ban transgender girls from playing in girls’ and women’s sports. The state’s Republican-controlled House passed Senate Bill 2 (SB 2) by a landslide 73-19 vote on Tuesday (20 April) after just “two hours of fierce discussion”, according to The Oklahoman. The bill would prevent trans athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports at publicly-funded K-12 schools, colleges and universities. SB 2 states: “Athletic teams designated for ‘females,’ ‘women’ or ‘girls’ shall not be open to students of the male sex.” The House amended the bill on the floor to require parents to sign a form “acknowledging the biological sex of the student at birth” for their child to be able to participate in youth sports.
