Human Rights Campaign Calls on NCAA to Cancel Events in States with Transgender Athlete Bans

Advocacy groups have noted a disparity between the outcry from transgender rights groups against states with anti-trans laws and tangible repercussions against those states from large corporations.
Five states have passed laws or implemented executive orders this year to limit the ability of transgender youths to play sports or receive certain medical treatment.
Alphonso David, president of the Human Rights Campaign, attributed the lack of backlash to a lack of awareness about the potential harm that these laws could cause to transgender young people.
Right now, transgender people in America are under assault.
I mean that in the most literal sense. In the last four months, 14 transgender people predominately trans women of color have been killed in cases of suspected anti-trans violence. Many more have been attacked and harassed. We are very large targets right now.
Assault also applies in a more metaphorical way. Thus far, over 100 bills attacking the rights of transgender people have been introduced in 31 statehouses across the country. A number of these have already made it to governors desks, while others are quite likely to do so.
One of the worst of these is now the law in Arkansas after a simple majority in the Legislature overrode Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson s veto of House Bill 1570. The bill, deceptively called the Arkansas Save Adolescents from Experimentation (SAFE) Act, will block the ability of transgender youth to access medication to delay puberty. Mitch McConnell Doesn t Want to Escalate Feud After Trump Called Him Stone Cold Loser

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky chose not to escalate tensions between himself and former President Donald Trump when asked about Trump s recent insults towards him.
Trump called McConnell a dumb son of a bitch and a stone-cold loser during an April 10 speech to the Republican National Committee (RNC) at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida. He made the comments while accusing McConnell of not adequately defend him during Trump s second impeachment trial in February.
When asked about Trump s name-calling on Tuesday, McConnell responded, What I m concentrating on is the future.
Jordan Blair Woods, law professor and Faculty Director of the Richard B. Atkinson LGBTQ Law & Policy Program at the University of Arkansas School of Lw, Fayetteville, discusses Arkansas s new law targeting key services needed Arkansas transgender youth.
Last week, the state of Arkansas became the first state in the nation to effectively ban gender-affirming care for transgender and gender diverse youth. The law, H.B. 1570, prohibits youth under the age of 18 from receiving transitional or puberty-blocking hormones and surgery, and allows private insurers to refuse gender-affirming care. The law has no provision for youth who are currently receiving gender-affirming care. It also exposes medical providers to potential lawsuits and loss of licensure for any referral for or provision of gender-affirming care to youth under the age of 18.
