DES MOINES, Iowa, February 12, 2021 (LifeSiteNews) Iowa’s Republican Governor Kim Reynolds has lifted the state’s mandate on masks, physical distancing and size limits on gatherings, urging people to make their own decisions about wearing masks and attending gatherings, and to take “reasonable” measures to maintain public health
In a new proclamation signed February 5, and effective February 7, Reynolds allowed people the freedom to take health precautions if they wish to, but without the previous mandates, including enforced physical distancing and mask wearing.
In all likelihood, Iowans were simply scared into taking the virus more seriously. The experts I spoke with said they saw more people wearing masks in grocery stores and shopping centers as autumn turned to winter. Iowans stayed home more during the state’s fall surge than they had in September, and they remained there through December and early January, according to SafeGraph, a company that collects cellphone-location data. Road traffic decreased from October to November, and stayed steady, instead of increasing, through Christmas and New Year’s, Jeff Von Brown, a spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Transportation, told me. “It looks like people did heed advice” not to travel, he said. (Winter weather may have also played a role.)

Friday’s weather will be sort of a prelude of the snow that could come this weekend. According to the National Weather Service, it will be warmer, with a high near 30 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area with mostly cloudy skies. Then Friday night the wind will pick up from 5 to 15 mph, gusting as high as 20 mph. This will be a sign that, you guessed it, a new weather system is prepared to roll through.
