Texas lawmakers will consider new voting restrictions as part of a special legislative session pushed by the state’s Republican Governor Greg Abbott after Democrats blocked earlier versions of the controversial bill in a dramatic walkout.
Republican state senators introduced their latest version of the legislation, now known as SB 1, which was introduced on Saturday, provoking an outcry from Democrats and voter advocates who insist that it was being rushed through the legislative process to avert public scrutiny.

Amid record-setting migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, several Republican-led states as far away as South Dakota are mobilizing to send National Guard units to the region at the behest of the Republican governors in Texas and Arizona who have criticized the Biden administration s response to the surge.
Although cooperation between state and federal authorities on border enforcement and immigration matters is hardly new, the scale of expected involvement by U.S. states far from the southern border is widely viewed as unprecedented.

President Joe Biden met Thursday afternoon with the leaders of many US civil rights organizations, amid mounting criticism that the Democratic Party, both in Congress and in his administration, was doing little or nothing to counter an aggressive Republican drive to attack voting rights and erect more and more barriers to those seeking to cast a ballot, particularly among poor and minority voters.
