Senate panel OKs bill to trim governor s emergency powers

Senate panel OKs bill to trim governor’s emergency powers BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Senate lawmakers unable to overcome two vetoes by Republican Gov. Brad Little of legislation to curb his authority during emergencies such as the coronavirus pandemic advanced a third measure Wednesday. The Senate State Affairs Committee voted 7-2 to send the bill to the full Senate. Senate leaders say Little worked with them on the latest measure, and they anticipate his approval if it gets to his desk. The measure is a watered-down version of the previous legislation and replaces an entire section of Idaho law having to do with emergency declarations.

Senate fails to override governor s veto on emergency powers

By KEITH RIDLERApril 19, 2021 GMT BOISE, Idaho (AP) The Republican-dominated Senate on Monday failed to override GOP Gov. Brad Little’s veto of a measure seeking to curb a governor’s power to respond to emergencies like the coronavirus pandemic. The Senate voted 23-12, failing by one vote to get the two-thirds threshold needed. It came after Little vetoed the legislation on Friday with support from four former governors and said he planned to veto a similar House bill. That veto had not yet been announced Monday, and it wasn’t clear if the House measure had reached his desk. The Senate’s failure to override the veto puts the survival of the second bill in doubt.
