Opinion: Republicans should encourage more, not less, voting

Republicans now just focused on overturning elections Re “California coronavirus case rate now lowest in the continental U.S.” (April 21): The absurdity of the partisan move to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom came into clear focus in this U-T headline. It illustrates that, overall, Newsom has done a good job in dealing with the pandemic. With a defeat of Newsom in this heavily Democratic state virtually impossible, the recall effort is nothing but an enormous waste of money by grandstanders wanting their names in the public eye. There was a time when both major political parties graciously accepted defeat, a major strength of our system of governance. Now, however, there are “poor losers” everywhere, whether they are Californians trying to reverse Newsom’s 2018 election or Arizonans trying to reverse Joe Biden’s 2020 election.

Dwight Eisenhower built the interstate highway system in the 1950s. John F. Kennedy defined federal industrial policy in the 1960s by pledging to put a man on the moon by decade’s end. In his first 100 days in office, Joe Biden has been attempting to emulate all three, seeking to combine and update for the 21st century his predecessors’ visions for a muscular Washington role in the economy.
