Legislature ends session with $101 5 billion budget

TALLAHASSEE – Florida lawmakers approved a $101.5 billion state budget – by far the largest in Florida history – and ended the 2021 legislative session Friday amid a flurry of last-minute deal making. After intense partisan clashes over a host of controversial bills that gained approval this year – including election law changes, a measure pushing back against Big Tech censorship, anti-riot legislation in response to Black Lives Matter protests and a transgender sports ban – a budget process initially expected to involve painful cuts ended up being relatively smooth. The spending plan for the year beginning July 1 is 10% bigger than the current budget, after being fattened by billions of dollars in federal stimulus money.
