Letter: Never forget Jan. 6 attack By Raymond E. Smith, Vancouver

It has been over four months since the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol; 147 Republican Congress members violated their oath of office voting to not recognize Biden as president.
The reaction from numerous corporations was to choose America over the Republican Party and stop donating to said party members.
Now, the Republican Party is trying to get corporations to go back on their decision. They claim that the American public, for the most part, has forgotten all that has happened in the past.
As a veteran and natural born citizen, I feel the necessity to let all know that I have not forgotten, nor will I ever forget, that day and the disrespect that was clearly demonstrated by those who attacked the Capitol and the 147 members of Congress that violated the Constitution. Those not speaking out are, by their silence, condoning what was done.
About $14 billion, or 1% of discretionary spending, will be devoted to earmarks in this year’s spending bills. The requests that lawmakers made, listed on the House Appropriations Committee website, go beyond the roads, bridges and research grants earmarked in the past.
Republican Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana, for example, wants $775,000 for a mobile medical clinic offering free cancer screenings to rural residents in his district.
And Democratic Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon of Pennsylvania wants $650,000 for mental health professionals to team up with police or to intervene when someone is experiencing a mental health crisis.
It remains to be decided which projects will get funded. Lawmakers have been told they can put in up to 10 requests, but “nobody will be getting 10 requests,” said Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the Democratic chairwoman of the House Appropriations Committee.

I have many thoughts about the political situation in our country, but the writers whose columns have appeared in the newspaper recently have expressed my thoughts so much better than I could have. If only House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and most of the Republicans in Congress would heed these words often attributed to Buddha: Only three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth. The Big Lie will continue to serve power and greed until the truth is openly accepted. Until that happens, we cannot be a free country for only the truth can set us free.
Deputy U.S Treasury chief sees G7 support for 15%-plus global minimum tax Reuters 1 hr ago (In 9th paragraph, adds dropped word the in quote)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo said he anticipates strong support from the G7 industrial democracies for the Biden Administration s proposed 15%-plus global minimum corporate tax, which in turn should help solidify support in the U.S. Congress for domestic corporate tax legislation. My sense is that you re going to see a lot of unified support amongst the G7 moving forward, Adeyemo told Reuters on Monday after supportive comments about the Treasury s proposal from France, Germany, Italy and Japan.
