Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Bauchi State office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has proposed the creation of 1,349 additional polling units across the state.
The disclosure was made by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Ibrahim Abdullahi explained that the move is in line with Constitutional provisions and other relevant Electoral laws in the country which empowers it to do such.
He explained that all the existing 174 expanded polling units are to be confirmed as poling units in addition to the proposed new ones in order to make voting more convenient for the voters as against the present situation particularly the COVID-19 preventive protocol.
Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state,
Dr Adeniran Tella, gave the warning in Ado-Ekiti at a stakeholders’ meeting with political leaders, youths, women and religious groups. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was convened to address issues bothering on expanding voters’ access to polling units, as it affected the state.
“The commission is challenging you to play this game by the rules.
“The Electoral Act, 2010, Section 9991, as amended, frowns at organising election campaigns ahead of the stipulated time.
“For the avoidance of doubt, that section of the law states that the period of campaigns in public by any political party shall commence 90 days before the voting day and end 24 hours before the day,” Tella said.
For the remaining 753 Voting Points in Osun to be converted to Polling Units, the national headquarter of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has to ratify the reports of the expansion of voter access to Polling Units.
This was revealed in an address delivered by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Olusegun Agbaje at the stakeholders meeting on expansion of voter access to Polling Units held Thursday, 6th May 2021 in Osogbo.
Agbaje said the ongoing expansion exercise though geared towards the 2023 General Elections can still be used for the 2022 gubernatorial election in Osun State.
The REC explained that the reason for embarking on the expansion of voter access to Polling Units was done to address the issue of inadequate Polling Units and its attendant challenges as prescribed by the Electoral Act 2010, Section 42.
