Yakubu laments spate of attacks on INEC facilities, advocates community

By Emmanuel Oloniruha Abuja, May 19, 2021 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the spate of arson and vandalism of its facilities and property was worrisome, as it would adversely affect its commitment to continue to improve the electoral process. The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this at a meeting of Resident Electoral Commissioners in the 36 states and the FCT, held on Wednesday, in Abuja. Yakubu said the attacks had been on the rise since the 2019 General Elections, but had now developed into a crisis. He said in the last three weeks or so, INEC local government offices in Essien Udim in Akwa Ibom , Ohafia in Abia and Udenu in Enugu State, were set ablaze by unidentified persons.

INEC to resume voter registration June 28, says Yakubu

By Emmanuel Oloniruha Abuja, May 19, 2021 The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Wednesday said it had concluded arrangements to resume Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) on June 28. The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at the commission’s meeting in Abuja, with the Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Yakubu said the commission was working to update its registration software to accommodate the newly established polling units to enable prospective voters to register. “However, more work still lies ahead. “Apart from the CVR, we shall continue our preparations for two bye-elections scheduled for June 19 in Sabon Gari State Constituency in Kaduna State and Gwaram Federal Constituency in Jigawa State,” he said.
