Malaysia extends amnesty scheme deadline for undocumented workers

Malaysia extends amnesty scheme deadline for undocumented workers Kathmandu Post Kathmandu, July 14 Malaysia has further extended the amnesty deadline for undocumented foreign nationals including Nepalis. Malaysian authorities, through the amnesty scheme introduced last November, offer an opportunity for undocumented foreign workers to either return home voluntarily without facing any legal action or apply for legal status. The amnesty deadline, which ended last month, has been extended one more time until December 31. The extension of the deadline is expected to benefit more than 10,000 undocumented Nepali workers in the Southeast Asian country who could not use the scheme before its deadline expired on June 30.

Malaysia s downgrade to Tier 3 on human trafficking – inevitable? — Jason Loh | What You Think

JULY 6 The news report on July 1 that the US State Department has downgraded Malaysia’s ranking in its “Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report” (2021) to Tier 3 (from Tier 2) can only provoke two responses: expected (unsurprised) or unexpected (surprised). Those who are unsurprised at the move will point to the deterioration in labour standards and the practice of forced labour as highlighted by regular reports emanating from international non-governmental organisations (NGOs). On the other side are the sceptics who argue that such incidents of labour exploitation can only be isolated and insulated – which is why they’re kept hidden away from public eyes and able to evade the government’s “antenna” (for so long), so to speak.
