EXPLAINER: Questions remain about conditions of migrant kids ELLIOT SPAGAT and NOMAAN MERCHANT, Associated Press March 31, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail 30 1of30Young minors lie inside a pod at the Donna Department of Homeland Security holding facility, the main detention center for unaccompanied children in the Rio Grande Valley run by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), in Donna, Texas, Tuesday, March 30, 2021. The minors are housed by the hundreds in eight pods that are about 3,200 square feet in size. Many of the pods had more than 500 children in them. The Biden administration on Tuesday for the first time allowed journalists inside its main detention facility at the border for migrant children, revealing a severely overcrowded tent structure where more than 4,000 kids and families were crammed into pods and the youngest kept in a large play pen with mats on the floor for sleeping.Dario Lopez-Mills/APShow MoreShow Less

We’ve already seen all of the horror stories of unaccompanied children being tossed over a ten-foot border wall by coyotes, leaving them on the ground for CBP to find. But now some of the immigration enforcement agents are reportedly too overwhelmed by the numbers to do even the minimal amount of processing work. According to an Associated Press report, entire families have been turned loose, not only without a court date but without any paperwork at all. Some haven’t even been fingerprinted or had their identity verified. So I take it we’re just working on the honor system now?

During a remote inspection of the La Palma Correctional Center in Eloy, Arizona, the Department of Homeland Security s Office of Inspector General (OIG) found violations that jeopardized the health, safety, and rights of detainees, according to a report published Thursday. Citing nearly 1,300 grievances from immigrants held at the detention facility, the internal watchdog said detainees depicted an environment of mistreatment and verbal abuse.

Florida Governor Calls on Biden to Resume Trump Immigration Policies

Florida Governor Calls on Biden to Resume Trump Immigration Policies Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said he is sending a letter to President Joe Biden today asking him to continue the prior policy that allowed authorities to deport illegal immigrants in custody who had committed crimes. DeSantis told reporters on Thursday that the Biden administration is removing detainers from illegal immigrants. Detainers are “critical for ICE to be able to identify and ultimately remove criminal aliens who are currently in federal, state or local custody.” “We’ve already had in Florida a handful of criminal aliens that had finished their sentences and the detainers were removed by the Biden administration,” the governor said. “Normally they would have been transferred to federal custody and removed, and now the federal government is effectively releasing them into our communities.”
