(WALB) - Georgia is the deadliest state for pregnant women. The maternal mortality rate is more than twice the national average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The numbers surrounding the issue are staggering, especially, for Black women in Georgia, who by some counts, are six times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications. The Phoebe Putney Health System launched a program to help curb maternal mortality just last month.

New program helps first-time moms navigate motherhood

ELDORADO (WSIL) -Egyptian Health Department now has a program for first time mothers called the Nurse Family Partnership. Nurse Family Partnership is a home visiting program specifically for first time pregnant moms, that starts early in the pregnancy and continues until the child turns two years old, said Nurse Supervisor Alyssa Oglesby. The program is already in 41 states, and is now in southern Illinois due to funding from the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority. So we see moms who get their own free personal nurse to help guide them through their pregnancy, said Oglesby. The nurses provide information on whatever moms want to learn about with topics including labor and delivery, breastfeeding support, and parenting skills.
