How CQ service is raising awareness of domestic violence

Each May in Queensland is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, which aims to raise community awareness of domestic and family violence. According to Queensland Courts domestic and family violence statistics, domestic violence applications were up 13.3 per cent in the last year in Rockhampton, with contravention of domestic violence order charges down only 4.2 per cent. Counsellor at Helem Yumba CQ Healing Centre Bernadette Anderson said to raise awareness during the month, the healing centre would encourage members of the community to research and look at ways to help support their families.

Date Time Townsville to turn purple for domestic violence awareness Townsville City Council is raising awareness of domestic and family violence in the month of May by turning landmarks across Townsville purple. Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month runs for the month of May and is a chance for the whole community to learn more about the prevalence of domestic violence in our own backyard. Council has turned the Strand Fountain purple, and will light up landmarks like the Townsville sign, Victoria Bridge and the Wharton Reef Lighthouse in support of the cause. Community and Cultural Development Committee chairperson Ann-Maree Greaney said turning landmarks purple across Townsville was just one step towards shining a light on the insidious issue of domestic and family violence.

QPS Spread Warmth for Mother s Day

Date Time QPS ‘Spread Warmth’ for Mother’s Day Together, the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Spread the Warmth for Mother’s Day by donating new bath robes to mums fleeing domestic violence and living in crisis accommodation. From the combined efforts of staff around Brisbane, QPS collected over 100 bath robes. Commissioner Katarina Carroll proudly showing off some of the QPS’ contribution to the cause Commissioner Katarina Carroll said that the prevalence of domestic and family violence (DFV) in the community is significant, with our police attending over 260 DFV related calls for service each day. “I would like to thank the Queensland Police Service’s, Domestic, Family Violence and Vulnerable Persons Command for coordinating this collection as it provides victims with some much needed comfort in a time of need,” Commissioner Carroll said.

Not now, not ever : Students walk against domestic violence

Each May in Queensland was Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, which raised community awareness of domestic and family violence and sent a message that domestic and family violence in families and homes would not be tolerated. St. Brendan s College assistant principal Shane Peers said this was an important responsibility and cause the college continued to support. As one of the largest collectives of men in Central Queensland, they are our sons, brothers and future husbands and fathers, Mr Peers said.
