Following a year of unrest and strife, this free, online learning program will provide lessons and resources for Illinoisians to learn about racial issues and systemic inequalities, together. The organization will use these funds for Implicit Bias and Cultural Competency training. YWCA Northwestern Illinois CEO Kris Machajewski said some police officers aren’t informed of the many cultures that exist. “And just like anyone, we have to first even bring the awareness that there are all of these cultures,” she explained. “And then where do our implicit biases lie in those that we don t even know we have?” Machajewski said culture isn’t just someone’s ethnic customs but also their way of life. She cited examples like poverty and imprisonment.

She ran the women’s empowerment group at the Eurma Hayes Center in Carbondale for many years with few resources. Nancy has been fighting for social justice and spearheading the anti-rape movement for over a decade in Southern Illinois. WSIU Public Broadcasting, a service of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is pleased to announce Nancy Maxwell as a recipient of the ‘Neighborly’ award in the individual category. WSIU received four separate nominations from her coworkers at The Women’s Center.

Roselle Public Library District awarded Healing Illinois Grant   Updated 12/16/2020 7:50 PM The Roselle Public Library District was awarded a Healing Illinois grant by the Illinois Department of Human Services in partnership with the Chicago Community Trust. Healing Illinois is an initiative to engage residents of communities across the state that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 in a meaningful dialogue. The Roselle Public Library District received the amount of $8,000 in a wave of grants awarded to 86 nonprofit organizations across the state of Illinois.   The library will be joining these organizations to support racial healing initiatives through the creation of community-centered, inclusive and safe spaces to talk about racial disparities and design local solutions.
