£5m for A595 in west Cumbria is welcomed

A £5m funding boost for one of the county s most important roads has been welcomed. Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership (CLEP) secured the money through the Government’s ‘Getting Building Fund’ and it will be used to improve the A595 Greyhound Inn/Torpenhow junction, which was identified as a priority during public consultation in 2018 and 2019. Part of the funding will also be used for preliminary works to enable a larger project that will deliver climbing lanes and broader route alignment on the A595 at Bothel. An application was made to the Department for Transport for funding in August 2019 for the A595 Bothel Strategic Improvement project and a decision has not yet been made.

Ambitious plans for Carlisle Station development on track Carlisle Railway Station Plans to transform Carlisle Railway Station and its surrounds look set to take a major step forward after Government gave the green light to funding for the project. Cumbria County Council’s Cabinet have today welcomed confirmation of £20m funding through the Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal after the business case for the project secured Government support. Release of the Government funding is subject to a number of funding conditions being met. Cabinet has now agreed to enter the funding agreement with the associated conditions that will see the County Council deliver this ambitious project.

Chamber of Commerce CEO Rob Johnston retires after 15 years service

CUMBRIA’S Chamber of Commerce will bid farewell to one of its most loyal servants after 15 years of service. Chief Executive Rob Johnston has announced he will be retiring from the position at the end of December. He will take on a new role as a non-executive director. Rob released a statement on his departure. He said: “At the end of this month, I will retire after 15 years as Chief Executive of Cumbria Chamber of Commerce. “When I took the job, I came with a background in industry but only a scant knowledge of the Chamber network. Over time, I’ve come to appreciate how Chambers can make a real difference for businesses.

Completed scheme to boost active travel in Kendal includes footway widening along Shap Road

A SCHEME to boost active travel in Kendal which is part of a multi-million-pound package of improvements has been completed. The Shared Access Improvement Scheme to renew and improve the footway on one of the main routes in the north of the town has involved 1.21km of footway widening on Shap Road and new cycle advisory signage being installed. A spokesman for Cumbria County Council (CCC) said the Shap Road footway widening - from north of Queen Katherine Avenue to Longpool - had created space for pedestrians, mobility scooter-users and cyclists . Cllr Peter Thornton, who represents the Kendal Strickland and Fell division and is deputy leader of the county council, said: “I warmly welcome the wider shared pathway at the north end of Kendal which is designed for pedestrians, mobility scooters, families with pushchairs and cyclists.
