Government says yes to Highly Protected Marine Areas welcomed by Cumbria Wildlife Trust

Protected: Black Brittlestars.Credit: Paul Naylor A CUMBRIAN conservation group has welcomed a long-fought-for commitment to the first ever sea sanctuaries where all damaging activities will be banned. Last year the Benyon review of Highly Protected Marine Areas (HPMAs) was published by Defra and included in its list of recommended sites for protection, some in the Irish Sea, both inshore and offshore. The Wildlife Trusts backed its recommendations that HPMAs should be an essential part of the UK network for protection and recovery of the marine environment, and that the government should introduce HPMAs as soon as possible. Last month Defra announced it will begin the process for designating HPMAs by the end of 2022, setting an ambitious commitment to protect our seas.

Housing plans at Deer Park in Carlisle gets green light

A CITY councillor fears a controversial new housing development will wreak catastrophic damage on the area’s wildlife. Helen Davidson, Carlisle’s only Green councillor, fears the impact the construction will have on Belah’s nature reserve. It comes after Gleeson Homes was granted planning permission to build 80 new homes on land at Kingmoor Road, Belah, North Carlisle by the planning inspectorate. The application had previously been refused by the city council’s planning committee. Cllr Davidson said: “I’m massively disappointed. It’s not hugely unexpected but it’s really devastating both for residents and also for the wildlife that lived in the field and the impact it’s going to have on the local nature reserve.
