The national association for judges said there was “no reason” to treat them differently from other members of the community as it welcomed changes to the Sex Discrimination Act that could lead to a judge being dismissed from office.
The judges’ body was joined by the Law Council of Australia, which said the move to close the exemption for MPs and judicial officers under the Act was “refreshing”, and by former judge Anthony Whealy, who said it was “about time”.
The Act as it now stands covers Commonwealth employees, but there has been uncertainty about whether that includes statutory appointees, judges and members of Parliament.
