Deputy Premier Steven Miles said it was too early to predict an end to lockdown
Queensland s latest Covid outbreak of the Indian delta variant continues to grow, with 16 new cases of community transmission announced on Tuesday morning.
Brisbane schools continue to be the focus of the latest outbreak, with one new case linked to Indooroopilly State High School, two cases linked to Brisbane Girls Grammar School and three new cases linked to Ironside State High School.
Five new cases are household or family contacts of already confirmed cases. Another was a neighbour of a known case.
The new cases bring the number of active cases linked to the current outbreak to 47.
Deputy Premier Steven Miles said 34,718 tests were conducted in the last 24 hours.
“Unfortunately we have had to delay some surgery and some outpatient work.”
Many health workers have been forced into isolation as parents or close contacts of students at Brisbane Grammar School, Brisbane Girls Grammar and Ironside state school.
Venues at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital, the Princess Alexandra hospital and the University of Queensland have been listed as high-risk exposure sites.
Young said she was still concerned about the missing cases linking infections in two returned overseas travellers to an Indooroopilly state high school student and her family. “We don’t know how this outbreak has happened.”
Nine of the new Covid cases are school students, Queensland’s health minister, Yvette D’Ath, said.

Brisbaneâs latest COVID outbreak has grown to 47 after 16 new local cases were recorded on Tuesday, with growing concerns health authorities will struggle to contain the delta cluster before the eight-day lockdown ends on Sunday.
While the outbreak has so far been mostly contained to seven schools in Brisbane, the worst fears of health authorities were confirmed on Tuesday afternoon with a new positive case in Cairns.
Queensland Deputy Premier Steven Miles said he hoped the eight-day lockdown would be enough to contain the latest COVID-19 outbreak.Â
