Long learnt his fate on Tuesday after making his application for freedom last year. Last year marked 20 years since Long lit the fire which tore through the Palace Hostel in Childers, killing 15 backpackers including two Australians. After a 19-day trial in 2002, he was found guilty of two counts of murder and one count of arson and sentenced to life in prison. He was then granted an extension to gather more material for the parole board until January 21 this year.

The Slacks Creek woman came to the attention of officers at Woodford at the weekend when she was allegedly found with a significant quantity of suboxone strips. Intelligence officers at Borallon Training and Correctional Centre have also been praised for their vigilance after thwarting an alleged attempt to introduce opioids into the centre. A 42-year-old Morayfield woman was pulled up by officers from the Queensland Police Services Corrective Services Investigation Unit at about 8:30am on Monday after they suspected she was attempting to smuggle drugs in.

Lotus Glen Correctional Centre’s new General Manager has been named. Chief Superintendent Gabriel Payne ACM will take up the role as General Manager at the centre in coming weeks. Deputy Commissioner Gary McCahon said that Ch Supt. Payne would bring a wealth of corrections and management experience to the position of General Manager at the centre. “Ch Supt Payne received the Australian Corrections Medal in 2020 for her 21-year career in Queensland corrections, particularly her commitment to improving operational service response to remote communities, enhancing a coordinated response to domestic and family violence and reducing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander in the criminal justice system,” Deputy Commissioner McCahon said.

Capricornia Correctional Centre’s new General Manager has been named. Chief Superintendent Richard Butcher will take up the role as General Manager at the centre in coming weeks. Deputy Commissioner Custodial Operations Gary McCahon said that Ch Supt. Butcher would bring a wealth of corrections and management experience to the position of General Manager at the centre. “Ch Supt. Butcher’s career began in the UK Prison Service where over 24 years he progressed to Deputy Governor, working across areas including physical education, prisoner management, security, custody and re-settlement,” Deputy Commissioner McCahon said. “Ch Supt. Butcher previously worked for Department of Corrections WA and started as General Manager at Lotus Glen Correctional Centre at Mareeba in Far North Queensland in 2019.
