As Queensland miner Wayne Sellars emerged from underground where a methane gas explosion had created a wall of âblue flameâ that engulfed him and four colleagues, he did not realise he was on fire until one of his supervisors stopped him and patted him down to smother the flames.
Mr Sellars gave evidence at the Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry in Brisbane on Wednesday, describing the initial shockwave at Grosvenor Coal Mine, 150 kilometres south-west of Mackay, as âlike a cycloneâ, before the second shockwave brought âblue flame . like standing in a blowtorchâ.

In a statement to the Queensland Coal Mining Board of Inquiry, which the Daily Mercury has obtained, Mr Sellars described the moment of impact that changed his life forever when he was caught up in the blast with four other workers. The Airlie Beach resident in his submission also stated he was aware of a number of methane exceedances on the longwall before the blast that left himself and four other men with horrific burns injuries.
Labour hire contractors at Grosvenor mine were treated differently to the permanent workforce and would lose their bonuses if someone was injured onsite, a miner has told an inquiry. Counsel assisting the board Ruth O Gorman asked Mr Sellars to explain the benefits and drawbacks of being a permanent worker compared to a labour hire contractor in the mining industry. (There s a) huge difference between being a permanent and a labour hire contractor, Mr Sellars said. He went on to explain how contractors were treated differently to the permanent workforce. It s just the way it is, Mr Sellars said. In a permanent workforce you ve got more of a voice to speak up.
