REVEALED: Somerset schools which gave out most suspensions

Premium Content Subscriber only ALMOST 2000 suspensions have been dished out to students at a Somerset region high school in a five-year period, new data has revealed. Lowood State High School issued 1807 suspensions, which included 1656 short suspensions, 74 long suspensions and 41 exclusions. The data comes as the Gatton Star and Courier Mail reveal a staggering 374,506 suspensions have given to students across give years – three times as more as the ACT and twice as many as NSW schools. In the Somerset region, 20 schools handed out 3801 suspensions between 2015 and 2019. Lowood State School recorded the second highest number of suspensions 469, while Kilcoy State High School issued 456 suspensions.

Uni students getting real experience at Rio Tinto Yarwun

Premium Content Subscriber only UNIVERSITY students are getting hands-on experience at Rio Tinto s Yarwun alumina refinery as part of their engineering degree. Central Queensland University student Bethany Collins has been joined by the University of Queensland s Chien-Yi Wang, Kai Yee Soo and Nishtha Vyas from the Queensland University of Technology. The four engineers of the future are working in separate areas of the refinery. Ms Collins, who is studying civil engineering, is working with the refinery s business development team Rio Tinto Yarwun general manager Mark Gilmore said the two-months of on-the-job experience would be invaluable for the university students. For these engineering students, spending time in a workplace like Yarwun complements their academic studies because they can put what they learn into practice, he said.
