The Oversight Board, an independent body set up by Facebook to review difficult moderation decisions made by the social media giant, has said the firm was right to remove potentially incendiary posts by former US president Donald Trump.
The board also said that Facebook needs to follow its own rules and either ban Trump permanently or reopen his account, rather than leaving him with an indefinite suspension. Effectively, the board has passed a contentious, high-profile problem back to Facebook to decide on.

In January, as his supporters staged a violent protest at the US Capitol building, Trump posted messages on Facebook urging them to leave peacefully, but also alleging that the US election had been illegally tampered with against his favour. Facebook swiftly removed the messages and eventually indefinitely banned him from the platform.
Computer modelling congress to meet in Brisbane
Brisbane will be the host of the Asia Pacific Congress on Computational Machines (APCOM) in 2025.
The event will be held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre (BCEC).
The team at BCEC collaborated with the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), supported by Tourism & Events Queensland and Brisbane Economic Development Agency (Brisbane EDA) to secure the event for Brisbane.
BCEC and Brisbane have secured 17 international meetings in the past 12 months across health, science, technology, agriculture, mining and social welfare, which are expected to deliver 20,000 delegates to Brisbane with an estimated $52.5 million in direct expenditure for the Queensland economy.
Guardian Australia has spoken to three separate researchers who say their attempts to undertake academic studies related to the policing of domestic violence were refused in a manner that implied police practices were already adequate and that research was not needed.
Police and the Queensland government have also resisted calls by the Women’s Legal Service Queensland for a comprehensive audit of underlying officer attitudes.
While police concede there have been systemic failures to protect women, they say publicly that problematic officers and their poor responses are outliers. It’s said that suggesting police have a cultural problem is “offensive”.
