Master Gardener: Spring makes for an annual affair
Joe Johnson
It’s spring. Well not exactly.
The spring equinox is at 5:37 a.m. Saturday. After Saturday, the days start to be longer and warmer than the nights. This is because the Northern hemisphere will begin to tilt towards the sun.
Therefore, it is time to start thinking about landscaping your yard for the summer. What are you going to plant this year? More perennials? More ground cover? More scrubs? Wait a minute. How about planting some annuals. Lots of annuals.
For color, make annuals a priority
Maybe it’s time to make annuals your priority and the focal point of your landscape. Why? Because no other group of plants will deliver the color that annuals will add to your landscape. Providing a variety of colors in your flower beds is not the only benefit of planting annuals.
