MSU Extension honors U P Master Gardeners for volunteer service | News, Sports, Jobs

REBECCA KRANS MARQUETTE Extension Master Gardeners contributed more than 1,000 volunteer hours in 2020 amounting to nearly $29,000 to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula communities. Extension Master Gardeners from Michigan’s Upper Peninsula were recognized on Nov. 20 for their many volunteer hours and continued assistance with Michigan State University Extension’s public gardening outreach and educational efforts. Although Extension Master Gardeners were not required to complete any volunteer hours during this past year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many opted to continue volunteering while following the MSU COVID-19 guidelines. No face-to-face volunteer efforts were allowed during 2020. Despite these restrictions, Upper Peninsula Extension Master Gardeners volunteered over 1,000 hours with an economic impact of nearly $29,000 to communities. Master Gardeners accepting applications for 2021 class

Calling all green thumbs. The Sandoval Extension Master Gardeners is now accepting applications for the 2021 Master Gardener Program, which will be conducted partially online this year. The program begins Feb. 2 and is scheduled to run 15 weeks. Classes will be conducted on Zoom and will constitute a college class on gardening in the High Desert climates of Sandoval County. The program includes classes taught by area specialists and New Mexico State University professors. Some of the topics to be covered include: permaculture and sustainability; plant identification; fruit and vegetable production; tree selection and care ; and pest management. The program is open to all metropolitan area residents.

CANFIELD Mahoning County’s master gardeners continue to help residents with their questions and concerns on plants, pests and plant diseases. What used to be an in-person program has moved to a virtual platform, but the mission remains the same. Until 2020, the plant and pest clinic was open every Monday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon, from the beginning of April through the end of October. There are 91 master gardeners in Mahoning County. During a normal year usually two dozen master gardeners volunteer in the clinic. “Before 2020, master gardeners were busy in the clinic answering questions from people who came in or called in that day, or who had sent questions in earlier,” said master gardener and clinic leader David Sprague. “In a typical year the clinic answers 1,000 questions for residents of Mahoning and nearby counties.
