From book club to bootcamp: How these Seattle tech veterans took bold action on racial inclusion

Femi Akinde and Mike Koss met a decade ago at StartPad, a former Seattle co-working space where Koss was director and Akinde was a startup founder. They both eventually moved on, but stayed in close contact. They had monthly lunches and started a social justice book club to discuss the Black experience.

Less than three months after launching a partnership with Code Fellows to offer training in coding/tech and data security as part of its new training division, iCreate Institute has graduated its first batch of coding students.
The cohort was comprised of a group of 20 professionals from companies such as NCB and The ATL Group.
“In keeping with playing our role in preparing Jamaica for the 4th Industrial Revolution, we thought it extremely important to upskill professionals in coding/tech. The success of economic development is heavily reliant on creativity and ingenuity and we must make every effort to hone our skills, said Shanan Smart, general manager of iCreate Institute.
