During a blustery, bone-chilling February morning last year, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer was joined by about a half-dozen north county veterans as he called for additional health-care assistance for those who may have been touched by Agent Orange during their service to the United States in Vietnam. As winds whipped across Memorial Park right off Lake Erie in Dunkirk, elected officials who joined him also spoke briefly in doing their best to keep the event moving.
Real-feel temperatures were somewhere between zero and the teens. But Schumer, who makes a concerted effort to visit all 62 state counties each year, did not disappoint in his appearance and message weeks before the COVID pandemic hit.

“We applaud the Biden Administration for making economic recovery, infrastructure development and environmental issues top priorities in its first one hundred days and believe that the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative’s federal priorities fit perfectly within that agenda,” said Mayor Mike Vandersteen, Chair of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative.

Effingham, IL -(Effingham Radio)- The C.E.F.S Economic Opportunity Corporation’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) still has energy assistance funding available for winter utility assistance. Any household that has applied as of last July 27, 2020 or after would not be eligible to apply again unless they are being disconnected from their utility service. LIHEAP provides one-time grants to help income eligible households pay for their winter utility expenses.
C.E.F.S. began taking LIHEAP applications on July 27th for the current program year 2021. To date in Effingham county energy benefits totaling $245,311.00 have been approved for 456 households. The average payment per household was $538. Additionally, in Effingham county 80 households received $44,874.00 in emergency reconnection assistance. The average reconnection assistance payment was $561.
