During World War Two Bristol was the fifth most heavily bombed city in the UK.
From November 24, 1940 to April 11, 1941 Bristol endured 548 air raid alerts, 77 air raids and 1,299 fatalities.
Bristol was a heavy target for air bombardment due to the presence of the Bristol Harbour and Airplane company. It was relatively easy for enemy forces to track a course to the city due to the guidance of the River Avon from the Bristol Channel.
