Magee said the hospital received several thousand doses of Moderna s vaccine, but did not have an exact number. He said BayCare hoped to administer vaccine to 500 to 1,000 employees daily on Tuesday and Wednesday. It is completely voluntary, he said. According to Governor Ron DeSantis, the vaccine will be distributed to 173 hospitals in Florida, including nearly 50 in the Tampa Bay area. Since the Moderna vaccine does not require the same ultra-cold storage as the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, it can be delivered to more hospitals. DeSantis says the Moderna vaccine will be available in 43 counties in the state.
Like the Pfizer vaccine, Moderna’s clinical trials showed it to be 94% effective at protecting against coronavirus. Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccine requires a second follow-up dose and each vaccine has its own narrow window of time for a patient to get that second dose.
LAKELAND Polk County and Florida saw nearly record-breaking numbers of new COVID-19 infections on Thursday, as health care officials await word of possible federal approval of a second vaccine.
There were 466 new COVID-19 cases reported in Polk on Thursday, according to the Florida Department of Health s daily report. Of these, 432 were state residents and 34 were non-state residents, possibly either tourists or snowbirds. This is the county s second-highest day for new infections, following the 505 cases reported July 18. It brings the county s total to 32,432.
Florida reported 13,148 new cases Thursday, based on the state agency s report. This is the state s third highest day for new infections following July 11 and July 15, when Florida reported more than 15,000 cases.
