Local sculpture plays a bit part in a Hollywood movie | News, Sports, Jobs

GREG HITCHCOCK The Leader Herald Alex Higgins stands in front of one of Jones’ sculptures used in the movie “Paint.” (The Leader-Herald/Greg Hitchcock) MAYFIELD Local artist and sculptor Alexandra Higgins said she was thrilled when two sculptures were chosen for a major Hollywood movie being filmed in Saratoga Springs. Owen Wilson, star of such films as “Wedding Crashers” and “You, Me and Dupree,” has been filming a movie in the Spa City and chose two local sculptures to feature in his latest film production “Paint.” The sculpture is part of a collection from the estate of long time Gloversville resident Ernie E.R. Jones who passed away in April 2005.

This year s awards show will focus on individual actors and actresses and will be pre-recorded.Gary McPherson  Proctors announced the nominees for the 2021 High School Musical Theatre Awards at Proctors at a live event on Wednesday. Due to schools being unable to perform live musicals,  14 schools participated in the event s fifth year, plus an additional 19 individual students (not associated with a participating school) submitted a virtual audition for adjudicators in Best Actor and Best Actress categories.  “This year more than ever, in a year of cancelled high school performances and empty auditoriums, said Philip Morris, CEO of Proctors Collaborative, we are taking a minute to recognize those students who would have excelled in their school’s productions.”

Apr 10, 2021 George H. Purdy Jr., age 82, a resident of Johnstown, passed away on Monday, April 5, 2021. at Nathan Littauer Hospital after a short illness. George was born on December 17, 1938, in Gloversville, NY. He was the son of the late George H. Purdy Sr. and Nora M. Clegg Purdy. He was a graduate of Gloversville High School, class of 1957. He worked in the leather mills all his life and retired from Liberty Leather in Johnstown. George loved to play golf and was a long standing member of the Fox Run Golf Club. He was the first one in the parking lot at 5:30 a.m. every morning even though tee time was not until 8:00 a.m. He had an on-going bet with his friends that if he got a hole-in-one, they would have to pay up; he would always ask if they had their $100 bill ready before he drove the ball. Mar 4, 2021 Rosemarie Van Nostrand, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on March 2, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. She was 77. Born August 20, 1943, in Gloversville to Frank and Louise (Groshans) Lawrence. Rosemarie is a graduate of Gloversville High School, class of 1962. She met her future husband and soulmate, James, at age 16, and she married him on June 30, 1962. She travelled with James during his duty with the Air Force, before returning to the area and spending close to 20 years working for the Northville Central School, where she loved being around kids. Her family was everything to Rosemarie. Her passion was spending the day with her children and grandchildren sharing her love of cooking with them, preparing all sorts of wonderful recipes. She was an expert in the use of ingredients and is remembered for her assurance that recipes were only estimates. She had countless cookbooks and subscribed to many cooking journals. Mar 3, 2021 Mrs. Irene (Hazard) Mang of Fort Plain, passed into her Savior’s presence on February 26, 2021, surrounded by her family. She was a devoted mother and a devout Christian. Irene was hospitable and generous. She loved to have guests for Sunday dinner or host large gatherings in her home. She was an excellent cook. Irene gave her life to Christ at age 13. She became very involved with Youth for Christ and the ministry of the Rev. Jack Wyrtzen. She sang in a trio that was part of the Rev. Wyrtzen’s evangelistic crusades. Throughout her life she spoke openly about her faith and wanted others to have the opportunity to know her loving Savior, Jesus Christ.
