Policymakers Used to Ignore Child Care Then Came the Pandemic

Policymakers Used to Ignore Child Care. Then Came the Pandemic. Experts who sounded the alarm about the care economy were often shunted to the side of policy discussions. Not anymore. Credit.Maria Nguyen May 9, 2021 When the economist Nancy Folbre got a call from the MacArthur Foundation in 1998, she was expecting rejection: a courtesy call to deny the funding application she’d submitted. She had reason to think an institution might overlook her work. It explained how the care sector defined as economic activity in the home and the market was a crucial part of the economy but operated differently than other types of businesses.

How Biden s American Families Plan could help Alabama families and children

How Biden’s American Families Plan could help Alabama families and children Today 6:18 AM President Joe Biden’s sweeping plan to tackle poverty nationwide includes measures that aim to help Alabama teachers, parents and children. The federal government already has directed billions of dollars of aid to Alabama schools, businesses and health care systems over the past year; the Biden administration says, though, that much more work is needed as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and addresses long-standing inequities in education, the workforce and health care. The $1.8 trillion American Families Plan proposes $109 billion to go toward two years of free community college for students across the country and $39 billion for two years of tuition at minority-serving colleges for students with a household income of less than $125,000.

Joe Biden American Families Plan shifts child care costs to taxpayer

“The American Jobs Plan will help millions of people get back to their jobs and their careers,” Mr. Biden said in outlining the plan, which is the second phase of his infrastructure package. The spending in the families plan is in addition to a $2.3 trillion jobs plan he released last month. “Two million women have dropped out of the workforce during this pandemic, too often because they couldn’t get the care they need for their family, their children,” said Mr. Biden, citing an estimate by the left-leaning National Women’s Law Center. To pay for his infrastructure proposals, Mr. Biden wants to raise taxes that he said would force the wealthy and corporations to start paying their “fair share.”

This might sound like hyperbole, but I believe it’s undoubtedly accurate. The early years of Jewish education are when young Jewish families share the experience of raising children, a special bond that endures for years to come. Together, these families gather for Shabbat dinners, observe Jewish holidays and attend school events. It’s also a time when supportive educators share what they’ve learned about each child with their parents. At this critical juncture, adept educators would even notice an incongruence in a child’s development and work with the parents to address the issue. In Jewish early-childhood
