Oxygen shortages bite in poorer countries battling Covid
Life-saving supplies key to treating patients, with jabs months away for much of world

Global demand for medical oxygen to treat patients with Covid-19 has risen sharply in recent months, fast outstripping supplies and raising concerns that thousands of patients in low and middle-income countries will not receive life-saving treatment.
Demand has increased by more than a fifth in the past three months, with many countries experiencing larger rises. Manufacturers have been diverting oxygen from industrial uses such as welding to healthcare, but funding and focus have been limited, and capacity in hospitals and clinics is insufficient to cope with the jump in intensive-care patients, companies and health experts say.
Zim doctor appointed Save the Children UK chair
ZIMBABWEAN-BORN doctor, Tsitsi Chawatama (42) is the new Save the Children United Kingdom chairperson.
Chawatama, a consultant paediatrician who grew up in Zimbabwe, has a wealth of clinical and development experience in Africa, having worked across the continent.
Save the Children is an international humanitarian aid organisation for children.
Commenting on her appointment, Chawatama said: “I am delighted and honoured to be joining the board of Save the Children UK at such a crucial time in history where children’s lives and their future wellbeing are threatened by unprecedented social, environmental and economic issues.”
