As pupils prepare to return to class tomorrow, Clare Flintoff, of the Asset Education Trust, has admitted there are concerns about children and staff being back on the front line .
As primary school children and staff return to their classrooms after the Christmas break for the start of the January 2021 term we find ourselves at probably the most challenging point of the pandemic so far, as we are confronted by ethical, as well as operational, issues and dilemmas about how to proceed.
We know how important education is and none of us want to see primary children entirely learning from home again. But there are some worrying statistics about transmission in the 0-9 age range and a new variant of the virus that is reportedly up to 70% more infectious. We are told to continue with safety measures that were proving pretty reliable before the new variant made an appearance but there is no new guidan

Peter Cruddas, the businessman and Conservative donor who resigned in 2012 after a cash-for-access scandal, has been ennobled by Boris Johnson - against the advice of the Lords Appointments Commission.
Johnson finds himself “at the centre of a new cronyism row”, says the London Evening Standard, after becoming the first prime minister to reject the advice of the honours watchdog since it was set up 20 years ago.
He “received £50,000 from Mr Cruddas for his campaign to become Conservative leader in 2019”, says the BBC. Cruddas has also “donated £3.3m to the Tory party, as well as £1.5 million to the Vote Leave campaign”, the Evening Standard adds.

Boris Johnson on Tuesday overruled the Lords appointments watchdog to hand multimillionaire party donor Peter Cruddas a peerage.
The House of Lords Appointments Commission had objected to the nomination of the City tycoon on the basis of historic concerns over his involvement in a cash for access row during his term as Conservative Party treasurer.
