An expert panel on Wednesday (12 May) blamed bad coordination as well as dithering by national governments and international organisations for the failure to tackle Covid-19 before it became a full-blown pandemic, as India’s death toll topped 250,000.
India added a record 4,205 deaths to its Covid-19 toll in the past 24 hours, with the variant stoking the country’s surge now present in dozens of other countries across the globe.
India said a record number of people were killed by the coronavirus, pushing its death toll over a quarter million, while a leading virologist said it was too early to say if infections had reached a peak.

CLEVELAND, Ohio A U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory panel recommended the Pfizer vaccine for children 12-15 on Wednesday, and participating CVS Pharmacies are offering appointments for that age group starting Thursday.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley has endorsed the report of The Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response, describing it as “timely and excellent work”.
The co-chairs of the Independent Panel, former President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, and former Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark, presented their findings and recommendations for action to curb the COVID-19 pandemic, on Wednesday.
In a statement from Barbados Government Information Service, Mottley said the findings and recommendations of the report “are exactly what is needed” to help the world come closer to winning the battle with COVID-19.
“Barbados and other countries like mine have been calling on the international community for urgent global action. We believe that many of the challenges have been addressed in this report.
