Scientists Demonstrate Record-Breaking Laser Pulse Intensity Using Petawatt Laser

Scientists Demonstrate Record-Breaking Laser Pulse Intensity Using Petawatt Laser Using a petawatt laser, scientists have demonstrated the highest laser pulse intensity of more than 10 23 W/cm 2. This laser intensity which is 10 times more than the one reported by a research team from the University of Michigan in 2004 took more than 10 years to reach this record-high intensity. Researchers created high-intensity pulses using the petawatt laser (pictured) at the Center for Relativistic Laser Science (CoReLS) in the Republic of Korea. World s most intense LASER is revealed

Scientists in Korea have achieved the highest intensity laser beam ever – measuring 1023 watts per centimetre square (W/cm2).   Researchers were able to focus laser pulses to a spot the size of just over one micrometre, less than one fiftieth the diameter of a human hair.  The unprecedented record-breaking laser intensity is comparable to focusing all the light reaching Earth from the Sun to a spot of 10 micrometres.  10 micrometres is barely more than the standard size of a red blood cell (which is 6 to 8 micrometers).   The achievement was made at the Center for Relativistic Laser Science (CoReLS) within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) in Daejeon, South Korea, using a highly complex system of mirrors, lenses, sensors, power amplifiers and more.

It took more than a decade to reach this laser intensity, which is ten times that reported by a team at the University of Michigan in 2004. These ultrahigh intensity light pulses will enable exploration of complex interactions between light and matter in ways not possible before.

International Partners Pursue AI-Based Microgrid Research in Hawaii

An unusual group of partners from the Republic of Korea and Hawaii are conducting microgrid research at a saltwater pumping facility in Hawaii, with a goal of using artificial intelligence (AI) to help boost the efficiency of the existing power system by 30% when it is off-grid because of utility outages. Two million dollars in funding comes from the Korea Energy Technology, Evaluation and Planning Institute (KETEP), which funds international cooperation and testing of Korean technology in foreign locations.
