Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX), the operator of Hong Kong s stock exchange, on Wednesday revealed record earnings for 2020, in the latest sign of the city s resilience as a global financial hub despite the complicated global environment.
However, the stellar data failed to underpin the shares of HKEX, as an unexpected announcement of a local government plan for a 30-percent increase in the city s stamp duty on stocks trading hammered the market. Industry observers have mixed views on the repercussions of the proposed tax hike.

An underground train that will reach speeds of more than 160 kilometers an hour was transported to a depot in Nansha district of Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong province, on Sunday.
The train, manufactured by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive based in Zhuzhou, Hunan province, was delivered as the depot became ready to host trains.

Attracted by the opportunities in the Greater Bay Area, Chan moved to Guangdong province in 2015 and has since then worked in the financial sector there. Chan, in his 30s, described settling down in mainland cities as an inevitable decision for an ambitious young man like him.
While Hong Kong has a comparatively simple industrial structure, the Greater Bay Area as a whole owns more complete industrial chains and vibrant markets, as well as enormous demand for financial services, which offers professionals a much broader arena to realize their aspirations, Chan said.

Guangzhou city authorities are inviting more major film and TV companies to set up headquarters for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
The city will start hosting the annual Bay Area Golden Rooster film exhibition in the first half of this year, Zhu Xiaoyi, deputy head of the Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Guangzhou Committee, said at a news conference in Guangzhou on Thursday. The Golden Roosters are one of the China s top film awards.
