Mets Top 25 Prospects for 2021: Other Players of Note

Jose Acuña, RHP Signed out of Venezuela during the 2019-2020 international free agent signing period, 17-year-old Jose Acuña shows the makings of being a starting pitcher. At 6’2”, 175-pounds, he has a solid pitching frame and is likely to add additional mass in the future, increasing his durability and fastball velocity. As the summer progressed, he added a few ticks to that fastball, signing on July 2nd with a fastball that topped out at 91 MPH and ending the summer with a fastball that topped out at 94 MPH. Complementing his fastball is a curveball and a changeup, both of which are developing but show potential. His curveball has sharp drop, while his changeup has solid tumble. Acuña has the ability to throw all three of his pitches for strikes and shows a baseball acumen advanced for a player his age.

COVID-19 has changed Iowans daily lives, but they persevere

USA TODAY Iowa Network and Lee Enterprises Published 7:47 pm UTC Dec. 22, 2020 Nurse Connor Ramirez balances a cellphone between her ear and shoulder blade as she maneuvers a patient’s bulky bed through Mary Greeley Medical Center’s back hallways. Four colleagues run alongside, toting medical equipment and the patient s belongings as the sun finally begins to peek out from a cloudy morning fog.   “Elevator G-29,” Ramirez says over the commotion, dispatching a cleaning crew to disinfect the lift just as soon as they hang up.   “We’re transferring a COVID patient to the ICU.”   In Waterloo, nurse Kelly Barnett dons a gown, an N95 mask, a face shield, gloves and goggles to work on the COVID floor at UnityPoint s Allen Hospital. Barnett prayed as she drove in this morning, as she does every day. She pleaded with God to help her patients recover and begged for Iowa to turn the corner on the virus still sweeping our state.

Editorial: A win and a loss

Forgive us for using a term from a different sport, but Major League Baseball delivered Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois a split decision this week, as it announced its plans to restructure the minor leagues. We were gratified to see, as expected, that the Quad-Cities River Bandits were included among the 120 teams to be affiliated with Major League clubs beginning next season. The Bandits are now a part of the Kansas City Royals farm system, and the Midwest League, which will be downsized from 16 teams to 12 teams, will move from being a low-A league to being a Class A-Advanced league.
