$18M in relief being used to fund renovations on Matapang

The newly passed $1.9 trillion federal pandemic relief bill will provide $661 million for Guam, said Guam Visitors Bureau President Carl Gutierrez, who said Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero has agreed to give the visitor agency $20 million to shore up its operations, “so it can aggressively market Guam,” when the island reopens to tourism. Gutierrez, who gave a brief presentation during Thursday s GVB board meeting, said the visitor agency had not been eligible for funding from past federal relief bills, but is eligible during this round. The visitor agency is funded by the hotel occupancy tax, but most of the island’s hotel rooms have been unused, and untaxed, during the past year because of the pandemic shutdown.
