Family Services urges men to seek help and stop hurting our women
Monday January 11, 2021 - It has been quite evident in the media recently that issues such as violence against women and girls seem to be topical in our society today. With the increase in awareness as it relates to gender based violence and the rise in Women’s Rights groups, one would think that the statistics would be on the decline. However, given our local scenario, we are witnessing the opposite.
For this particular piece, we explored violence against women from a male perspective in an effort to understand why some men hurt women and how they can seek help in an effort to avoid bringing harm to potential victims. THE EDITOR: Déjà vu! First day of school horror. It is like someone put 2020 on repeat. This is the only way to describe the news that greeted the teaching fraternity on the reopening of school.
January 2020, on the first day of school, principal Jezelle Phillip was stabbed to death by a male relative as her students looked on. On Monday, another first day of school, we receive news of the murder of Preysal Secondary School teacher Suzette Sylvester.
As the TT Unified Teachers’ Association joins the rest of the nation in mourning, we express sincere condolences to the family and colleagues of Sylvester and pray that her soul rests in peace.
Delores Robinson: Groots leader on a mission to save lives

Groots TT, founded by Delores Robinson, provides face-to-face and online counselling and runs a drop-in centre as well as transition and emergency housing for vulnerable populations. It also provides food hampers and sensitisation around domestic violence through workshops. - Sureash Cholai
Jamaican-born Delores Robinson grew up in a home affected by domestic violence. As a young woman she worked in an organisation that dealt with gender-based violence – but she later found herself in a similar situation.
Now she works to help victims and survivors of domestic violence to separate themselves from their abusive situations and stand on their own feet.
