A host of major car manufacturers are withdrawing their support for former President Donald Trump’s effort to ban California from setting its own zero-emission vehicle rules.
In a joint statement released by Toyota, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Subaru, the car manufacturers said the decision was made “in a gesture of good faith and to find a constructive path forward” with President Joe Biden. The companies added they were aligned “with the Biden administration’s goals to achieve year-over-year improvements in fuel economy standards.”
Since taking office, President Biden has directed agencies to reconsider Trump’s 2019 decision to revoke California’s authority to set its own emissions standards and requirements for zero-emission vehicles.

Seven companies said today that they were dropping support for the Trump administration s effort to limit California’s ability to set its own tailpipe greenhouse gas limits. Washington lawmakers consider shifting all new car sales to electric-only by 2030
You may be used to hearing a pushy car salesperson say, What can I do to get you in this car? But one big thing could be different in Washington state a decade from now. Proposals introduced this winter in the Washington Legislature would end sales of new gasoline-powered cars in the state by 2030.
The Democrat-backed proposals face opposition from Republicans, the oil industry and auto manufacturers. A prior version failed to advance out of committee in Olympia last session and the inside politics do not appear to have changed substantially since. However, the concept is catching on in a few other states and in countries overseas.

Mass. AG Must Face Challenge To Right To Repair Law
Law360 (January 27, 2021, 4:19 PM EST) An auto industry group s challenge to the recently passed amendment to Massachusetts Right to Repair vehicle data law will proceed after a federal judge denied a dismissal bid by the state s attorney general Wednesday, saying further discovery is needed ahead of a possible bench trial.
U.S. District Judge Douglas P. Woodlock has said since the inception of the suit, filed by the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, that he does not like deciding a preemption case on a record that has not been fully developed. He reiterated that theme following the Wednesday hearing, telling lawyers for the Alliance and the state attorney.
