McConnell breaks with Trump
The most powerful Republican in Congress, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, has launched a campaign to stop colleagues from joining a doomed last-ditch effort to reverse the election outcome in the parliament.
In moves that put him at odds with President Donald Trump, McConnell on Tuesday (Wednesday AEDT) congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on his victory and sought to put an end to his party s attempts to sow doubt about the election.
He was also trying to stave off a messy partisan spectacle on the floor of the House that could divide Republicans at the start of the new Congress, forcing them to choose between showing loyalty to Trump and protecting the sanctity of the electoral process.
