Mr President, We Must Close the Gunshot Gap! | Blog Posts

USA TODAY Young Black men and teens made up more than a third of firearm homicide victims in the USA in 2019, one of several disparities revealed in a review of gun mortality data released Tuesday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The analysis, titled “A Public Health Crisis in the Making,” found that although Black men and boys ages 15 to 34 make up just 2% of the nation’s population, they were among 37% of gun homicides that year. That’s 20 times higher than white males of the same age group. The CDC’s homicide stats do a better job of straightening out the race/ethnicity of victims than do the FBI’s stats, in which 93% of Hispanics are lumped in with whites. But the CDC totally sidesteps the politically incorrect topic of who is pulling the trigger in those homicides.

Michael Pope reports. Democrats have been able to require universal background checks and ban guns from polling places. But there s one part of the gun-violence prevention agenda they have not been able to accomplish legislation limiting access to assault-style weapons and high-capacity magazines, deadly equipment that has been used to commit some of the worst mass shootings in American history. I don t think it has enough votes to pass, says Delegate Mark Levine, a Democrat from Alexandria. He had a bill on assault-style weapons that passed the House last year, but it did not make it out of the Senate, where he says it was misunderstood.

Controlling Gun Violence

Fulfilling their campaign promises to take action against gun violence, Democrats in the General Assembly are sending Gov. Ralph Northam several gun-violence prevention bills. Lawmakers are taking action to exclude guns at polling places and government buildings, creating new restrictions for people convicted of domestic violence and extending the time allowed for the State Police to conduct background checks. The bills this year come after several new laws were created last year, requiring universal background checks and allowing local governments to regulate firearms. “Virginia is a leader now,” said Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran, who formerly represented Alexandria in the House of Delegates. “We’ve gone from dead last to first in terms of responsible gun-control legislation.
