The beginning of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season is just a few weeks away and, according to several forecasting agencies, a very active season is expected. While the science of meteorology has not yet evolved to tell us exactly how many storms will impact land, history tells us that the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast will likely incur some impacts from a tropical storm or storms during the coming months.
As previous storms and the global COVID-19 pandemic have taught us, anticipation and preparation for such events can lessen the extremity of their impact. Most residents in hurricane prone areas understand how intense the winds can be but many may not realize, or prepare for, other hazards a storm presents.
Top survey findings included:
Nearly 80% of respondents plan to prepare for the 2021 hurricane season up 21 percentage points over the 59% who said they planned to prepare in 2020.
Most respondents are willing to spend at least $100-500 on storm preparation.
Fewer than half of respondents review their home insurance policy annually, despite the fact that having adequate financial post-storm resources is a critical factor for successful recovery. As we approach the 2021 hurricane season, it s crucial that homeowners prepare before a disaster strikes, said FLASH President and CEO Leslie Chapman-Henderson. The length of the average wildfire season in Colorado has increased by 78 days since the 1970s.
While the state s main fire season is expected to begin in mid-May, officials have warned that wildfires that were once largely confined to summers and early fall will happen more and more.
“In 2021, we have already experienced fires, Gov. Jared Polis (D-Colorado) said. One of the things that is a change of paradigm is Colorado used to talk about a fire season. It’s now a year-round phenomena.
