Miners union leader in court for theft – Zambia: News Diggers!

Magistrates Court CONSOLIDATED Miners and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CMAWUZ) president Sumaili Mbewe has appeared in the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing over K108,000 cash belonging to Mabiza Resource Limited. The accused is alleged to have withdrawn some money which was wrongly deposited into the union account. Mbewe, 47, is facing a charge of theft, contrary to the laws of Zambia, but he pleaded not guilty. It is alleged that between April 30, 2020 and May 29, 2020, Mbewe, jointly and whilst acting together with other persons unknown, stole K108,681. Zim State Varsity Employees Plan Strike Over Poor Wages

By Mbekezeli Ncube ZIMBABWE State university staff has written to its employer informing the latter of its intention to go on strike in the next two weeks. The workers, speaking under the umbrella Zimbabwe State Universities Joint Council (ZSUJC), said in their letter that they were earning poor wages and were incapacitated. ZSUJC is made up of the Zimbabwe Universities and Allied Workers Union (ZUAWU) as well as the Zimbabwe State Universities Union of Academics (ZISUUA). The letter was directed to chairpersons of Zimbabwe State Universities’ Councils and copied to Zimbabwe State Universities’ Vice Chancellors, Zimbabwe State Universities’ Registrars and the Public Service ministry.

Teachers give notice to strike BY TATENDA CHITAGU/VANESSA GONYE THE education sector is set to suffer another heavy blow after teachers and State university employees gave notice yesterday to embark on a nationwide industrial action starting Monday to press for better working conditions. The day coincides with the resumption of classes for non-examination pupils after examination classes started their lessons on Monday this week. State university employees also gave a 14-day notice to the Public Service ministry announcing their intention to embark on a strike in protest over low wages. Their notice came at a time government has approved a 200% hike in university fees, which will result in students at State universities forking out between $25 000 and $40 000 per semester, up from $9 000.

Earlier this week (15th), artists and other workers in the music industry, organized by The United Musicians and Allied Workers Union UMAW, participated in demonstrations at Spotify offices across the globe. It follows the launch of the Justice at Spotify campaign in October last year, demanding that Spotify raise its streaming average for artist payments, as well as making other changes to the streaming platform’s business model. The demonstrations took place in Europe, as well as in Asia, Australia, Europe, the U.S., and Central and South America, with the UMAW also stating that the entire live music ecosystem in jeopardy due to the coronavirus pandemic and that artists and music industry workers are more reliant on streaming income than ever .

Through this, WSG, the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and the Food, Drinks and Allied Workers Union (FDAWU) will continue supporting job redesign projects rolled out in tandem with hotels adoption of technology.
